Finally! Gaetano Busuttil is here for an interview! We all know him as one of Malta's most iconic and talented fashion designers but there is more to him than just that! Let's get to know who Gaetano really is!

If your friends were here, what would they tell me about you?
Hmm I think that my friends see a totally different side of the “Gaetano” I put out there they would say that I have different layers of me that adjust to every situation there's the funny me, the serious me, the angry me, the listener me, the vulnerable me, the one that tries to help everyone and the weird one - all of those make up who Gaetano is in real life.
If you had a chance to start all over again, would you do things differently?
In my career probably I would put out there more of the work that most people don't know that I do. For example; paintings, interior design, creating storyboards for music videos among other things. I would rather I showed off that work not just pushing the fashion design work out there and leave all the others in the dark. As for my personal life, I wouldn't change a thing as even the mistakes I made helped me grow as a character and made me stronger.
What is your favourite mythical creature?
Mermaids first of all! I was always fascinated by them and deep down I truly believe they exist! I'm also fascinated by Greek mythology and Ancient Egypt as well as kings and queens of the past. Sometimes I spend hours reading and watching documentaries.

Who inspires you the most?
There's a whole list of people who inspire me in my personal life. My mum and my late dad are two people who inspire me a lot but I try to get inspired by every story that surrounds me.
What is one of the coolest experiences you've had?
I'm kind of living my coolest experience right now with my partner planning our wedding! As normally I see things from the outside - I usually just help brides design their dream dress. But, to be in that situation where you have to plan from A to Z it is one of the coolest experiences!
If you could have superpowers, would you use it for good or for evil?
That's a tough question! I was and still am fascinated with evil queens and villains so probably I would evil disguising myself as good.

In what ways are you the same as your childhood self?
I'm very much the same I think. I still believe in and love all the things I believed in and loved as a child. Physically I might have grown but mentally I'm still that little child with big dreams and endless imagination.
What do you want to be remembered for?
Wow! What a question! I think I want to be remembered as an artist who didn't follow trends and just did what really inspired him.
If you could trade lives with one of your friends, who would it be?
I think I wouldn't trade my life with anyone - no tea, no shade but I enjoy mine too much!
Do you consider yourself as a calm and collected person or is chaos your drive?
Both, to be honest, I'm a very calm and collective person but also chaos drives me as well. I'm like a coin in everything I do - there's always two sides of me!
You’re a designer, what inspires most of your work?
I always say I don't follow fashion or trends - music, divas, mythology and history really inspire me! If I see a fashion show it won't really inspire me. If I see a concert by a singer I love or a documentary about a queen or whatever, I get excited and inspired!
What is your next collection about?
I'm currently working on two collections.
One is merfolk inspired by the legendary mermaid and the other one is inspired by influential and powerful queens of the past (still debating what to name the collection!).

Which collection are you most proud of?
I couldn't choose one so I chose my top 3. Femme Fatale, my 2015 collection that won me the new designer award at the Malta Fashion Awards. It’s still one of my favourite collections! There is also Legacy from 2018 which was inspired by old Hollywood icons. And of course, the 2019 Butterfly collection, a tribute to the iconic Mariah Carey! I’m very proud that I found a way to combine together the 3 things I love - dressmaking, music and Mariah!
What would you tell your 10-year-old self?
Stay strong and don’t try to hide your weird self! There will be people who will try to bring you down and defame your name but that’s ok you will go through a really bad phase but you will triumph if you keep in mind that the truth will always win! Embrace all sides of you and don’t try to keep one side in the dark. Remember also, that you have a voice that can say no to situations you don’t like!

Thank you for taking time out of your busy life Gaetano! And thank you to my readers who keep up with my blog! Make sure to go show some mermaid loving to Gaetano across all platforms and hope you enjoyed today's blog post! See you next Saturday!
Sandy hugs and salty kisses,
Neville xx
